Farm Gate Sales
Produce stalls, farm shops, pick-your-own and tastings.
What it involves
Selling what you grow or make directly to visitors — an honesty-box stall, a weekend farm shop, pick-your-own fruit, honey, preserves or small-batch tastings.
How it can generate income
Margin on your own produce without wholesalers; small stalls can earn hundreds per weekend, while established farm gates become destination businesses.
Does the agritourism framework apply?
Yes — this is the farm gate premises category. Small-scale operations meeting the standards can be exempt development.
Zoning & development approvals
Exempt standards include a maximum of 100 visitors at any one time (pick-your-own visitors are excluded from this cap), set trading hours, and setbacks of at least 50 metres from property boundaries and 250 metres from neighbouring dwellings. Food sales also require council food notification/licensing — separate from planning.
Setup & operating costs
Low for a roadside stall; moderate for a shop fit-out, cool storage, signage and parking.
Environmental & practical considerations
Traffic and parking management, food safety, waste, and biosecurity where visitors enter production areas.
